Pitney Bowes awards presented in Caraquet

Wrestling coach Don Ryan of the Black Bears Wrestling Club was among the recipients as Sport New Brunswick presented the 15th annual Pitney Sports Awards Saturday in Caraquet. Ryan was cited as male coach of the year. Nancy Morrison of New Maryland was named official of the year as a softball umpire while McInnes Cooper of Fredericton earned the corporate award. Figure skater Kelsey McNeil of Salisbury was named Comfort Inn Female Athlete of the Year while cyclist Christian Meier of Langley earned the male athlete of the year award. Earning female coach of the year honours was Kathy Grenier of Cocagne in figure skating. N.B.'s Canada Cup baseball team was named Aliant team of the year. Fredericton's Ed Dunham was given a lifetime volunteer achievement award.

Black Kats undefeated at Horton hoop tourney

The Fredericton High School Lady Black Kats went undefeated at 3-0 to win the Horton High School girls high school basketball tournament held in Wolfville, N.S. on the weekend. FHS won both of its weekend games, 84-38 over Saint John High and 77-69 over host Horton High, to complete its unbeaten record. Brittany Gilliss had 26 points to lead FHS against Saint John. Robbi Daley added 17 and Colleen Barry 11 points for the winners. Ainslie Oland had 12 points for SJHS. Kats led 51-19 at the half. Gilliss had 21 points in the win over Horton. Daley added 17 and Shannon McCarthy 16 for FHS, which led 44-29 at the half. Abbie Dunker had 29 points for Horton High.

FHS unbeaten in jr. boys hoops tourney

Fredericton High Black Kats won each of their three games in winning the second annual Kennebecasis Valley junior boys AAA basketball tournament on the weekend. Victories for FHS were 93-45 over Saint John High, 87-76 over Kennebecasis Valley and 84-36 over Leo Hayes High. Peter Esson led FHS against SJHS with 25 points. Jordan Wright led SJHS with 16. Esson had 27 and Emmanuel Adiniy added 16 as FHS beat KV. K.D. Kent had 37 points for KV. Dan Zebarth and Esson each had 16 points as FHS beat Leo Hayes. Felix Zhou led Leo Hayes with 13. The Lions finished 0-3, also losing to Bernice MacNaughton of Moncton 50-39 and KV 78-52.

Stars triumphant in boys basketball

Carleton North Stars led 40-23 at the half and went on to defeat Sugarloaf High of Campbellton 75-49 in the final of the Bathurst High Phantoms Invitational basketball tournament. Tourney Wade Lawrenced led the Stars with 22 points. Daniel Mitchell led Sugarloaf with 18 points while Cedric McIntosh added 14. In final round-robin action, Devon Park Christian School lost 69-59 to Sugarloaf.
