
Keltics edge Spruce in Atlantic rugby

Rugby | Loyalists' B side, Lady Loyalists post victories

Turnabout is fair play where the Nova Scotia Keltics and the New Brunswick Black Spruce are concerned.
The Keltics posted a 13-12 victory over the Spruce in Atlantic Division National Senior Rugby League action in Halifax Saturday, avenging an earlier loss to the Spruce by the same score here June 6.
Scrum halfback Scott Forrest's second try of the game on the final play gave the Keltics the victory.
The Spruce got off to a strong start against the Keltics Saturday. Chris Aaen opened the scoring with a try in the first five minutes, with Brent Rowney booting the convert for an early 7-0 lead. Ryan Totten added a try at the 12 minute mark to boost the advantage to 12-0. Keltics cut the deficit with a penalty kick by Dave Burton before the end of the first half to close it to 12-3.
The Keltics roared back to score the only two tries of the second half, both unconverted, to register the win. The Spruce fall to 1-2 on the season with the loss. They'll face the powerful Newfoundland Rock July 10 at Loyalist Field in their final home game prior to Fredericton's hosting of a North American eights camp here July 24-26.
Meanwhile, the Fredericton Loyalists B side men blasted the visiting Woodstock Wildmen 35-7 in exhibition rugby action Saturday at Loyalist Field as Matt Thorpe, Derek Weaver, Andrew Reimer, Dylan Marche, Scott MacAfee, Joel Anderson and Greg McIntyre all scored tries.
In Moncton, the Lady Loyalists kicked off their season with a come from behind 29-22 victory over the Moncton Black Tide. Sarah Braam led the way with a pair of tries for the Lady Loyalists. Monica Nealis, Lindsay Brandon and Laura Locklin had the others. Brandon also booted a pair of converts for the Lady Loyalists, who will host the Saint John Irish Saturday.
Jen Miller, Kim Sinclair, Hannah Davies and Katucya Gauvin had the tries for Moncton. Sheila McKee booted a convert for the Black Tide, who surged to an early lead with a pair of tries.
Loyalists rallied to lead 12-10 at the half but Moncton came back to score the next two tries. However, the Lady Loyalists reeled off the next three tries and the convert to post the victory.
