Wet field postpones Sr. Royals' home game

Friday's scheduled New Brunswick Senior Baseball League game between the Fredericton Peterbilt DQ Royals and the Moncton Mets was postponed due to wet field conditions on Baseball Hill.

The Royals were scheduled to host the Chatham O'Donaghue's Ironmen on Monday, but that game has been pushed back to Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Royals Field.

The Ironmen, first with a 6-3 record, play the 5-5 Mets at Riverview on Sunday. The 5-4 Saint John Alpines and 5-7 Royals are idle this weekend.

Lady Loyalists to host Saint John at noon

There's New Brunswick Senior Women's Rugby League action today at noon at Loyalist Field. The Fredericton Lady Loyalists, who beat the Moncton Black Tide 29-22 on the road last weekend, host the Saint John Irish.

Canada hoopsters 0-3 at world universiade

The Canadian development women's basketball team lost 80-50 to defending champion Australia on Friday at the 25th Summer World Universiade tournament in Belgrade, Serbia.

Canada, down 38-21 at halftime, dropped to 0-3 and will meet 1-2 Hungary in consolation play Sunday and Mozambique on Monday. Fredericton's Kelsey Hodgson, who scored 37 points combined in Canada's first two losses, had six points and three steals against the Aussies.

Simon Fraser University's Laurelle Weigl of Stony Plain, Alta., led the way for Canada with 14 points, with St-Mathieu-de-Beloeil, Quebec's Carolann Cloutier following closely with 11.

Emma Langford and Amy Lewis paced Australia with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

'99 V-Reds Prospects 5-1 in final tourney

The '99 V-Reds Prospects reeled off five straight wins before falling 4-0 to the Junior Canadiens in the semifinal of the Montreal Meltdown, their final hockey tournament of the year.

The V-Reds beat the Montreal Kings 8-2, the Montreal Metro Blades 3-0, Hub City 3-0 and the Ice Dragons 5-1 to finish first in their pool. The V-Reds then edged the New England Nordiques 2-1 in overtime in quarter-final play on goals by Bryce Tracey and Adam McCormick.

Patrick Pellerin led the Prospects with seven goals in the tourney.

Cole Easton and Dominik Reid scored three apiece, Reed Mackenzie and Sloan Smallman two each and Nick Glynn and Michael Haswell one apiece.

Golf writer to attend Barrett Amateur

Lorne Rubenstein, an award-winning golf writer and a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, has confirmed he will attend this year's Barrett Amateur golf tournament July 29-Aug. 1 at the Fairmont Algonquin Golf Course in St. Andrews.

Rubenstein has been reporting on golf for more than 30 years, writing for publications around the world, including a regular column in The Globe and Mail.

He has published nine books, including Mike Weir: The Road to the Masters. He has just recently launched a new book, This Round's on Me.

Rubenstein was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 2007.
