
Caps gain revenge on Phantoms

The Fredericton A.L. Gullison Disaster Kleenup Caps beat the Saint John Phantoms 7-4 in New Brunswick Midget AAA Hockey League action Saturday afternoon at the Aitken Centre.
David Brewer scored twice and added three assists for the Caps, who avenged a 6-4 loss to the Phantoms a week earlier.
Matt Wright chipped in with a goal and two assists while Alex Lewicki, Aiden Hallihan, Colin Moore and Ryan Cain also put pucks past Saint John goalie Marcus MacDonald, who stopped 28 of 35 shots.
Devon Doucette led the Phantoms with a pair of goals. Paul Gulliver and Matt Allan also beat Caps goalie Josh LeBrun, who made 22 saves. Jon Walsh had two assists.
After Lewicki and Gulliver traded first period goals, Brewer put the Caps ahead to stay with a shorthanded breakaway goal just 12 seconds into the second. Hallihan slipped in Alex Matte's rebound at 5:49 for a 3-1 lead, but Allan, shorthanded, scored on a breakaway to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Caps responded with a power play goal at 10:37 when Brewer buried Wright's pass off the faceoff. Five minutes later, Moore tipped in Justin McCarthy-Paul's shot to make it 5-2.
Doucette ripped a slapshot top shelf just 26 seconds later, but Wright banged in Travis Arbeau's rebound 5:23 into the third, on the power play, and Cain converted Brewer's perfect pass at 11:19 to give the Caps a 7-3 cushion.
Doucette rounded out the scoring with 1:21 remaining.
Fredericton improves to 4-2-1 while Saint John slips to 2-2-1. In league action Sunday, Moncton Hawks edged West Kent Aces 3-2 with John Kelly scoring the game winner.
Female midget AAA
Moncton Rockets had a blast against the Fredericton Tommies in provincial midget AAA girls hockey league action Saturday in Moncton.
The line of Janik Robichaud, Shyler Campbell and Becky Bowes combined to score four of five goals as the Rockets prevailed 5-1. Campbell had a pair along with singles by Robichaud, Bowes and Amy Sweet. Berni Williams had the lone Fredericton goal with Taylor Dale and Connor Garagan drawing assists.
Tommies host Northern Stars Saturday at the Aitken Centre, game time 7:30.
Provincial Junior
Fredericton Falcons split a pair of games in New Brunswick Junior Hockey League action on the weekend.
Jeff McKinley had three goals and two assists leading the Falcons over Shediac/Cap Pele Predators 6-4 Saturday night at York Arena.
Theo deWinter added two goals and three assists for the winners with Brian Dunn adding a goal and assist.
Travis Duguay scored twice for the Predators with Jeremie Niles and Jason Legere each scoring a goal and an assist.
Falcons were 7-1 losers to Dieppe/Memramcook Voyageurs in action at the A.J. LeBlanc Centre.
Scoring a pair each for the Vees were Patrick Daley and Mathiew Gaudet. Scoring singles were Remy Robichaud, Julien Belliveau and Mark Rogers. Patrick Vienneau and Eric Landry each had two assists. Colin Richard had the lone goal for the Falcons.
Meanwhile, the Junior B Office Interior River Cats made a successful debut in their Tri County Complex home in Fredericton Junction with a 5-3 victory over Moncton Vitos Friday night.
Scoring goals for the River Cats were Drew Murray, Matt Waye, Marcus Hallett, Pat Olsen and Scott McIsaac. Goals for Moncton were by Matt Thorne, Brett Carroll and Matt Doiron. Next game for the River Cats is against Grand Lake Wild Moose Friday at the Tri County Complex beginning at 8 p.m.
Bantam AAA
District 3 ServiceMaster Clean Caps continued to hold the hot hand in the provincial bantam AAA hockey league with a pair of victories on the weekend.
Zack Whitlock had five points including three goals as the Caps hammered Codiac Subways 12-0 in Moncton Saturday.
Noah Zilbert, Oliver Cooper and Matt Murphy each added a pair of goals for the winners with Spencer Smallman and Mitchell Vanderlaan adding singletons. Ryan Foley earned the shutout, facing only eight shots. Caps had 58 shots at Subways' goalie Ryan Cobb.
Yesterday, it was much the same as the Caps hammered Restigouche Red Wings also by a 12-0 score in Burtts Corner.
Zilbert led the way with three goals with Vanderlaan, Conner Lewis and Matt Astle each scoring twice. Adding singles were Jon Penney, Smallman and Cooper. Smallman also had six assists. Caps outshot the Red Wings 45-14 with Patrick St.-Onge earning the shutout. Tyler Firth played goal for Restigouche.
Pee Wee AAA
District 3 Caps were depleted by the flu bug, but still had enough to upend the Moncton Hawks 4-3 in provincial Aliant pee wee AAA hockey league action on the weekend. The victory avenged an earlier loss to Moncton.
Goals by Ryan Tompkins, David Comeau, Sam Cameron and Dylan Goodine with the game winner at 10:29 of the final frame led the Caps. The scorers for Moncton weren't provided.
Daniel Bertrand and Matt McInnis each had a pair of goals leading Fredericton Canadiens over West Kent Aces 6-4 in action Saturday.
Logan Johnston and Patrick Thompson each added a goal for the winners. Luc LeBlanc had two goals for West Kent. Jeremy Wasson was the winning goaltender.
Sunday's scheduled against Kennebecasis Valley was postponed and will be played at a later date.
Girls high school
Woodstock Thunder got a pair of goals from Alyssa McLean in a 4-3 victory over Leo Hayes High McKinley Builders Lady Lions in exhibition girls AAA high school hockey action Sunday.
Sierra Paul and Sarah Ryder also scored for Woodstock with McLean drawing assists on both.
Brittany Price had two goals for Leo Hayes with captain Natasha Daigle scoring the other goal for Leo Hayes.
Next up for the Lady Lions is Thursday when they host Fredericton High at Willie O'Ree Place beginning at 7 o'clock.
