
Midget AAA Habs earn weekend split

Fredericton Darcy Simon Canadiens fell victim to the shootout in N.B.-P.E.I. midget AAA hockey league action Sunday at Willie O'Ree Place.
Matt LeBlanc scored in the shootout lifting Moncton Flyers over the Canadiens 4-3, who were coming off an impressive 7-4 victory over the previously unbeaten Saint John Vito's on Saturday.
Zach Cahill had the other three goals for Moncton against Zack Daigle in the Canadiens goal.
Scoring for the Canadiens were Paul Comeau and Philip Fife each with a goal and assist and Alex Murray. Winning goaltender was Scott Cale.
In another game Sunday, first place Miramichi Rivermen defeated Charlottetown Islanders 9-4 in Charlottetown. Brett Malone had three goals to pace the winners. Nick Kyle had two goals and an assist. Four players, Craig Dougan, Craig MacLaughlin, Jordan McInnis and Jeremy Balderston each had a goal and assist for Charlottetown.
Saturday in Saint John, the Canadiens handed the Vito's their first loss of the season after trailing 3-2 after the first period.
Murray led the Canadiens with two goals and an assist while Brett Barnhill had a goal and an assist. Nick Jordan, Paul Comeau, Brett Young and Brandon Parsons also beat Saint John goalie Andrew Mergl, who stopped 32 of 39 shots.
Fife, Adam Jones and Anthony Dion all had two assists for the Canadiens. Seamus Bowen made 31 saves for the win. Dylan Jones scored a pair of goals for the Vito's, who drop to 7-1. Marcus Mason and Mike Richard also tallied.
The Flyers rolled to a 5-1 win over the Islanders on Saturday, as Cahill fired four goals and Alexandre LeBlanc added the other against Stephen Miller, who stopped 49 shots. Brandon Thibeau made 19 saves for Moncton. Craig Dougan had the lone goal for Charlottetown.
One other game Saturday saw the first place Rivermen rout Cornwall Thunder 9-1. Brett Malone and Alex Blais each had two goals and two assists for the winners with Phillipe Arseneau adding a pair of goals and an assist. Maxim Godin had a goal and two assists for the winners. Jonathan Richards had the lone goal for Cornwall.
N.B. midget AAA
The Fredericton A.L. Gullison Disaster Kleenup Caps posted a pair of decisive wins on the weekend to raise their record to 6-3-1 in the New Brunswick Midget AAA Hockey League.
Yesterday afternoon at the Aitken Centre, the Caps blanked the short-staffed West Kent Aces 11-0 as Ryan Cain and Jesse Cole each had two goals and two assists while David Brewer added a goal and three assists.
Aiden Hallihan scored twice in support of winning goalie Josh LeBrun, who made 14 saves.
Tanner Banks and Brett Gorman chipped in with a goal and two assists each against Dominic Hache and Alex Paulin, who faced 27 shots. Travis Arbeau and Alex Matte rounded out the scoring.
Saturday night in Lancaster, the Caps downed the Saint John Phantoms 9-2. Alex Lewicki and captain Brad Kilbride both had two goals and an assist while Justin McCarthy-Paul helped out with a goal and two assists.
Banks, Hallihan and Cole all had a goal and an assist while Colin Moore also tallied. Gorman had two assists.
Chris Mason and Jordan Stephen replied for the Phantoms against steady goaltender Matt Bailey, who stopped 24 of 26 shots.
The Caps fired 45 shots, scoring five unanswered goals in the second to grab a 6-1 lead and chase starter Jeremy Doyle. Marcus MacDonald mopped up in the penalty-filled affair.
In Saturday's other game, Moncton improved to 7-0-2 by doubling West Kent 4-2.
N.B. Junior
Fredericton Falcons finished on the short end of a 7-4 against Hampton Hurricanes in New Brunswick Junior Hockey League action Saturday in Hampton.
Caleb Shepherd had two goals for the winners with Craig Smith adding a goal and assist. Peter Donovan, Sean Thomas, Nolan Guay and Jordan Trecartin had single tallies for the winners.
Jeff McKinley had two goals and two assists for the Falcons while Brian Dunn added a pair of goals.
In provincial junior B action, Office Interiors River Cats of Fredericton Junction defeated Grand Lake Wild Moose 5-4 at the Tri-County Complex. Pat Olsen had two goals for the winners with Scott Munn, Mitch Young and Matt MacGregor adding single tallies.
Ray Chase, Steve Worthern, Brendan Whelan and Shane Shanks scored the goals for the Wild Moose. Shots were 41-23 favouring the River Cats. Goalies were Jared Braun for River Cats and Andrew Morgan for Grand Lake.
High school
Leo Hayes High Dairy Queen Lions advanced to the semifinal round of the Miramichi Valley Invitational boys AAA high school hockey tournament before losing 4-2 to Miramichi Valley Pulamoos on Sunday.
Lions actually led 2-0 on goals by Kyle Crawford and Jim Keilty before MVHS roared back with two goals by A.J. MacKay and singletons by Josh Price and Matthew Stewart. The teams were tied 2-2 heading into the final frame. Andrew Mason played goal for Leo Hayes.
On Saturday, the Lions completed the round-robin portion at 3-0 with a 6-1 win over Dalhousie Condors. Keilty, Spencer Fry, Matt Carter, Cody Bell, Mike Benson and Brady Oxford scored for the Lions. Tyler Laballois had the goal for Dalhousie against Matt Dacres in the Leo Hayes net.
Bantam AAA
Zack Whitlock had four goals and Mitchell Vanderlaan added three more leading the District 3 ServiceMaster Clean Caps over Acadian Peninsula Lynx 10-1 in provincial bantam AAA hockey league action Sunday at Keswick Valley.
Jon Penny, Conner Lewis and Noah Zilbert had the other goals for the winners, who held the margin in shots, 56-10.
Scoring the lone goal for Acad. Penn. was Jean Samuel Legacy with 35 seconds left in the game. Patrick St-Onge recorded the goaltending win.
Saturday, the Caps and West Kent Aces played to a 4-4 tie, also at Keswick Valley Arena.
Scoring for the Caps were Lewis, Penny, Chris Bamford and Oliver Cooper with the game-tying goal in the game's final minute. Ryan Foley played goal for the Caps, making 20 stops. Jean-Philip Noel played goal for West Kent, facing 25 shots. Aces goal scorers weren't reported.
Pee wee AAA
Fredericton Sunbury Transport Canadiens made short work of the Chaleur Titan and Miramichi Rivermen in provincial Aliant pee wee AAA hockey league action on the road Saturday and Sunday.
Canadiens defeated the Titan 6-1 with Daniel Bertrand and Matt McInnis each scoring a pair of goals for the winning side. Patrick Thompson and Scott McCarthy added single markers. Josh Simpson made 12 saves in the Canadiens net.
On Saturday, the Canadiens routed Miramichi 8-0, outshooting them 63-11.
Thompson had two goals and Malcolm Arseneau had a goal and two assists for the winners. Single goals were by Bertrand, Connor O'Brien, Hunter Wood, Logan Johnston and Will Thompsom. Jeremy Wasson recorded the shutout with 11 saves.
Canadiens host the second annual Buster Harvey Memorial tournament scheduled for Willie O'Ree Place beginning Friday.
