UNB volleyballers impressive

University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds proved to be inhospital hosts for teams from the Quebec Universites Conference in men's university volleyball action on the weekend at the UNB main gym.

UNB hosted the second in a series of interlocking matches between teams from the Quebec and Atlantic Conferences.

UNB didn't treat their guests kindly, winning three of their four matches over the three-day schedule which began with three games on Friday.

After losing 3-1 to Laval of Quebec City on Friday, the V-Reds beat Sherbrooke 3-1 and Universite de Montreal 3-0 on Saturday and was a 3-2 winner over McGill of Montreal on Sunday morning.

V-Reds prevailed 15-11 in the final set in Sunday's match against McGill. UNB won the first set, 25-23, and the third, 25-19 while McGill was a 25-23 winner in the second and forced the tie-breaker with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.

Ryley Boldon had 15 kills pacing UNB. Tyler Veehuis added 11 kills as did Stephane Fontaine. Boldon and and Veehuis each had 29 asissts. Matthew Mosseler led McGill with 23 kills while Yannick Pirali had 22.

Kyle Blanchard had 10 kills while Boldon and Veehuis each had nine as UNB swept Montreal 26-24, 26-24 and 25-16 on Saturday. Maxim Morin had 10 kills for Montreal.

UNB needed four sets to thwart Sherbrooke also Saturday with set scores being 25-16, 23-25, 27-25 and 25-19 favouring the homeside squad.

Veenhuis had 12 kills to lead UNB while Blanchard added nine. Maxime-Rock Claessen led Sherbrooke with 21 kills.

On Friday, UNB beat Laval in the first set 25-18 but then lost the next three by scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 27-25.

Karl De Grandpre led Laval with 20 kills while Frederic Desbiens added 17 kills and 37 total assists.

Veenhuis had 14 kills to pace UNB with Boldon adding 11 and Blanchard nine. Boldon also had 34 total assists while Veenhuis had 33.

UNB's biggest rival in the Atlantic Conference, perennial champion Dalhousie Tigers, also won three of their four matches, losing 3-2 to Laval in play Saturday.

In regular Atlantic University women's volleyball conference action, UNB Varsity Reds won their first match in six starts, upending Universite de Moncton 3-1 with set scores being 14-25, 25-13, 31-19 and 29-17 in a wild match. In the clinching fourth set, UdeM led at one point, 22-19 and 24-21 before UNB rallied to win 29-27.

Handling the coaching duties for UNB was long-time assistant James Cress, replacing John Richard who's been battling health issues for the past 2 1/2 weeks. Starry Tanya Paulin of Bathurst also missed the match because of injury.

ACAA volleyball

Both St. Thomas University teams were 3-0 losers to their respective opponents from University of New Brunswick in Saint John in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action on Saturday.

Set scores in the men's match were 25-20, 25-11 and 25-17 with Chika Ikejiani leading the way for the Seawolves with six kills. Corey Pendleton added five. Brett Lewis had five kills for STU.

The UNBSJ women also prevailed over their STU rivals, with set scores being 25-9, 25-23 and 25-20. Jasmine Lavoie and Katie McKeown were the offensive leaders for the Seawolves with 10 and nine kills respectively.

AUS basketball

Basketball teams from University of New Brunswick continue to struggle in Atlantic University Conference play five games into the regular schedule.

The UNB men lost their fifth game in as many starts under second-year coach Brent Baker, 88-79, to Acadia Axemen Saturday in Wolfville, N.S.

The UNB women under coach Jeff Speedy aren't doing much better, losing their fourth game in five starts, 81-76 to Acadia Axewomen on Saturday also in Wolfville.

The UNB men trailed 43-38 at the half and got back to within one at the end of three quarters, but Acadia sealed the deal with a 26-18 run in the final quarter to improve their league mark to 2-2.

Four players hit in double figures for the winning Axemen with Alexander Traikov and Justin Boutilier each scoring 21 points. Andre Grant had 15 points while Casey Fox added 13 to compete the high-scoring quartet. Traikov also hauled down 12 rebounds.

UNB actually had five players hit for double figures led by Alex DesRoches with 18 and Daniel Quirion adding 17. Colin Adams contributed 12 points with Mike Anderson adding 11 and Colton Wilson 10 for the V-Reds. DesRoches hauled down nine rebounds as well.

In the women's tilt, Acadia improved to 4-0, taking a 44-39 lead at the half and managed to hold off the V-Reds from that point on.

Emma Duinker was the major offensive force for Acadia with 30 points while Alise Brown added 15 to the winning cause. Keisha Brown had 12 and Sondra Medley 11 for the Axewomen. Duinker added 10 rebounds.

Jessica Stead had 20 points to lead UNB with Tashine Van Vlack adding 14 more to go along with 10 assists. Amanda Sharpe had 12 points and Jordanne Holstein added 10 points for the losing UNBers. Emma Russell had 11 rebounds to lead UNB in that department.

ACAA basketball

Teams from St. Thomas University split a pair of games against their counterparts from University of New Brunswick in Saint John in ACAA basketball action Sunday.

Winning were the women Tommies 73-38 the Seawolves after leading 37-14 at the half.

Jillian Lamoreau had 17 points to lead STU while Renee LeBlanc chipped in with 13 points. Heather Atherton had 12 rebounds to lead the Tommies in that respect. Erin Sproul had seven points for UNBSJ.

The STU men weren't as fortunate, squandering a 29-26 lead at the half before losing 56-50 to the Seawolves.

Brad Van-Steeg led UNBSJ with 19 points while Graham Scott added 13. Steve Cordy had 13 points for the Tommies, who lost for the first time in four starts. Matt McGrath added 10 points to the STU cause.

On Saturday, it was high drama as the STU men pulled out a 98-93 win over Crandall University in Moncton, fighting back from a 13-point deficit late in the third quarter behind hot-shooting Andrew Holmes who hit seven of 13 from the three-point line including the backbreaker with just under a minute to go. He finished with 33 points overall.

Matt Robertson added 17 points for STU while Ryan MacPherson and Brad LeBritton each chipped in with 13 points.

Wade Lawrence led Crandall University with 24 points and 15 rebounds. STU led by one, 49-48, at the half.

It was no contest in the women's game as the Lady Tommies took a 37-14 lead at the half and cruised to victory over their counterparts from Crandall, 83-31, outscoring Crandall U 46-17 in the final half. Karin Everett led the Lady Tommies with 16 points while Lindsay Whittaker added 13 and Renee Leblanc 10 for the winners. Jill Lamoreau hauled down eight rebounds for the winners.

Emily Oland had nine points for Crandall U.
