Local speed skaters haul in 21 medals
Skaters from the Fredericton Amateur Speed Skating Club reeled in a total of 21 medals including 10 gold at the Harold Joyce Speed Skating championships held at the Aitken Centre.
Frederictonians winning gold included Alex Briggs in Div. 12 boys; Kristy Crabbe in Div. 11 girls; Kaden Venugopal in Div. 11 boys, Sophie Stewart in Div. 10 girls; Roger Fulton in Div. 10 boys, Jakob Weirathmueller, Div. 6 boys; Heidi Evans, Div. 6 girls; Kelly McCarthy, Div. 5 girls, Devin Patterson, Div. 2 boys and Evan Brideau, Div. 1 boys.
Locals winning silver included Andrew Evans, Div. 1 boys, Klinton Miller, Div. 2 boys, Hilary Gamblin, Div. 2 girls, and Sydney Smith, Div. 9 boys.
Bronze medallists included Caitlin Hyslop-Margison in Div. 12 girls, Nolan Corey, Div. 12 boys, Nathaniel Crabbe, Div. 11 boys, Sophia Gallagher, Div. 9 girls, Isaac Gallagher, Div. 8 boys, Rikki Doak, Div. 5 girls, and Kelsey Patterson in sport class girls.
Wilson holds hot hand for local hoopsters
Paige Wilson had 13 points in the first game and added 14 in the second leading Fredericton YMCA girls to a pair of wins in mini A basketball action.
First game margin was 42-23 with Rita Soffee adding 10 rebounds to go with Wilson's 13 points. In the second game, Rhayne Storey had seven rebounds as Fredericton prevailed, 43-28.
Bantam Kats dropped by Lynx in final
Fredericton YMCA Kats were 73-52 losers to Lancaster Lynx in the final of a bantam B basketball tournament held on the weekend. Peter Frenette had 18 points in a losing cause for the Kats. Lynx scorers weren't provided.
In round-robin play, the Kats defeated Hartland 64-48 and Perth Andover 46-18 and lost 50-39 to the Lynx.
Harrington leads Eagles in hoops
Matt Harrington had 22 points leading Devon Park Christian School Eagles over Sugarloaf Bruins of Campbellton 68-51 in junior boys AAA high school basketball action.
Colton Anderson added 13 points for the winners while Brett McCoy chipped in with 11.
Duan Fournier led Sugarloaf with 16 points. Osama Haque added 13 and Spencer Isaac 11. Sugarloaf led at the half, 31-27.
Bernard, Walton pace Harvey basketballers
Justin Bernard had 20 points and Gabriel Walton added 16 leading Harvey High Lakers over Sir James Dunn Academy 79-19 in junior boys AA high school basketball action.
Colby MacDonald added 15 points for the winners while Ryker Hatch added 14. SJDA's top scorer wasn't provided.
