Betts, Belsh earn Pitney Bowes awards
Wrestler Krista Betts of the UNB Black Bears and Fredericton Aquanauts Swim Team coach Marta Belsh were among the winners of the 16th annual Pitney Bowes Sports Awards put on by Sport New Brunswick. Betts was named Comfort Inn Female Athlete of the Year while Belsh was named female coach of the year. Fredericton volleyballer Jack Campbell was given a lifetime volunteer achievement award. Among the team awards were the Canada Games Men's Eight rowing team as the top team and the Canada Games' wrestling team winning the Roly McLenahan Award.
18 medals captured by F'ton Legion club
Members of the Fredericton Legion Track Club took home 28 medals including 10 golds, 10 silvers and 18 bronze at the Gagetown Indoor track and field meet held Saturday. Sarah Myatt had golds in each of the 400m and 800m in the girls 16-17 while Rachel Hopper was first in the girls U11 in the 60m hurdles and third in the 200m. Other gold medallists were Jason Bouchard in the men's 18 and over 200m, Robin Murdoch in the 16-17 boys 800m, Kyle Ancheta in the 14-15 boys high jump, Michael Colford in the U11 boys 1500m, Alexie Noble in the 12-13 girls high jump and Taylor Dunn in the 12-13 girls 800m. Bouchard added a bronze in the 60m, Colford a silver in the 800m and Noble a silver in the 1500m and a bronze in the 400m and a silver by Dunn in the 60m hurdles.
Green double gold medallist in judo
Emily Green of the Fredericton/UNB Judo Club captured gold medals in each of the girls U17 and U15 age categories at the New Brunswick Cup Invitational Judo tournament staged in St. Quentin. Other success stories included Lukas Nowak of the Harvey Club with a gold in the U17 minus 60 kg, Gabriel Traversy of the Oromocto Dragons with a gold in the U15 minus 42kg and Rene Pierre Bosse of Fredericton with a gold in the senior minus 81 kg class. Other medallists from the Fredericton-UNB club included Darcy Lavigne with bronze in the U17 minus 73kg and Dave Withers with silver in the senior minus 81kg category. Locals just finishing out of the medals were Sam Kristoffersen and Josh Cherrett. In total, area clubs captured seven medals involving eight athletes.
Eagles claim Valhalla basketball tourney
Devon Park Christian School Eagles beat the Carleton North Stars 91-79 in the final of the Southern Victoria Valhalla basketball tournament on the weekned. Joel Bishop had 24 points for the winners with Brandon Meikle adding 17 and Matthew Harrington 15. Andrew Schriver had 35 for the Stars with Carson McIntosh adding 18 in a losing cause. Devon Park beat Southern Victoria 92-66 in semifinal action. Meikle had 17 points and Brett McCoy 14 for Devon Park. Mason Kinney had 26 for Southern Vic.
Cougars sweep games in mini B girls hoops
Fredericton YMCA Cougars swept a pair of games in mini B girls basketball action Sunday, defeating Sackville 60-12 and Kennebecasis Valley 37-22. Meaghan Christie had six points in the win over Sackville with Taylor Forsythe adding five rebounds. Megan LeBlanc had 18 points in the win over KV.
