Ex-UNBers putting up big numbers

A couple of former University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, Stacey Smallman and Kyle Werner, both of the Tri-County Thrashers, share top spot atop the scoring derby in the Southern Senior Hockey League.

Smallman has nine goals and seven assists while Werner has six goals and 10 asissts in seven games. Steve Holland, also of the Thrashers, has four goals and 12 assists to share top spot.

Another former UNBer, Craig Soke of the Thrashers is a point behind with 15 points including six goals.

Adam Nelson of St. Stephen Seahawks has 14 points including six goals while Jason Brine of Tri-County and former St. Thomas Tommies' Kyle Gailey of Nackawic Hawks each have 13 points. Rene Goguen of Tri-County and Edan Welch of Nackawic each have 12 points followed by former Tommies' Nick Theriault in 10th spot with 11 points.

Martin Speer of Nackawic leads in goals-against average with 2.78 with a 3-1 record. Mike Vaughan of Tri-County has a 5-1 mark and a 2.96 goals against average.

In action this week, Blacks Harbour visits St. Stephen Friday night beginning 8 o'clock at the Border Arena. Saint John AQ Thunder plays at Blacks Harbour and St. Stephen plays at the Tri-County Thrashers Saturday night with game time 8 p.m. at the Tri-County Complex in Fredericton Junction. Nackawic plays at Saint John on Sunday.

Midget AAA

Fredericton Darcy Simon Canadiens begin a busy week of action in the N.B.-P.E.I. midget AAA hockey league hosting the Saint John Vito's in a rare Thursday night game beginning 7:30 at Willie O'Ree Place.

Canadiens currently sit fourth in the six-team circuit with 12 points on a 5-8-2 mark while the Vito's are third at 8-4.

Sixth place Cornwall Thunder, who edged the Canadiens 3-2 in overtime on the weekend, make the trek to Charlottetown to play the Islanders in another game Thursday night.

Canadiens will also host the pace-setting Miramichi Rivermen, 11-3-1, on Sunday afternoon beginning 3 o'clock at Willie O'Ree Place. Miramichi plays at Saint John on Saturday while second place Moncton Flyers are in Cornwall to take on the Thunder. Moncton plays at Charlottetown Sunday.

Meanwhile, statistics released by the New Brunsick midget AAA development league show Jesse Cole of the league-leading Fredericton A.L. Gullison Disaster Kleenup Caps holding a one-point lead ahead of teammate David Brewer in the scoring derby atop the four-team league.

Cole has 24 points including nine goals in 13 games while Brewer has 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points. Third is Justin McCarthy-Paul also of the Caps with 16 points including five goals. Three players, Matt Wright of the Caps, David Ross of Moncton Hawks and Zach Coates of West Kent Aces, each have 13 points.

Caps lead the circuit with 17 points on an 8-4-1 mark followed by Moncton with 16 points, Saint Joh Phantoms with seven and West Kent with four points. Caps have the weekend off.

High School

First place Leo Hayes High DQ Lions, 6-1, make the trek to Oromocto to take on the sixth place Oromocto High Blues, 2-4. in west conference boys AAA high school hockey action on Thursday night. Game time is 7:15 at Kings Arrow Arena.

Fredericton High School Black Kats, sitting second with a 5-1 mark after losing to Leo Hayes last week, are in Woodstock to take on the fourth-place Thunder, 2-3-0-1, beginning 7 o'clock at the Carleton Civic Centre also on Thursday night.

Lions will be among the participants at the Universite de Moncton tournament running Friday to Sunday.

Incidentally, league statistics show Josh Blanchard of OHS and Kyle Crawford of Leo Hayes sharing the league atop the scoring derby each with 12 points including seven goals for each.

Three players including Simon Toner of Thomas Albert, Brett B. MacLean of FHS and Jeremie Ouellette of Cites des Jeunes each have 11 points with Mack Grasse of OHS, Jared Demerchant of Carleton North and Brandon MacDougall of Woodstock locked in a three-way tie each with 10 points. Top goalie is Andrew Mason of Leo Hayes with a 2.25 goals against in 240 minutes. Matt Dacres of Leo Hayes has a 2.67 mark in 180 minutes. Blake Lemon of FHS is fifth with a 4.16 mark in 202 minutes.

In girls AAA hockey action, Fredericton High School Lady Black Kats play exhibition games against Riverview High on Friday and St. Malachy's of Saint John and St. Stephen High on Saturday. Leo Hayes High Lady Lions play at Sussex Regional High in exhibition action Friday. Southern Victoria Vikings play at Oromocto High Scholten's Lady Blues in action Saturday night at the Kings Arrow Arena.

Pee wee AAA

The two area teams in the provincial Aliant pee wee AAA hockey league meet head-on Friday nght at the Lady Beaverbrook Rink.

District 3 Caps, sitting in a three-way tie for top spot in the league with a 5-3-1 record, take on the third place Fredericton Sunbury Transport Canadiens, 4-2-1, in a 7:15 start at the LBR.

Both teams are coming off victories Sunday with the Caps defeating West Kent Aces 6-0 and the Canadiens getting past the Saint John Sea Dogs 3-2.

Both teams also see action on Sunday. The Canadiens host co-leader Moncton Hawks, 5-1-1, Sunday morning beginning 10:50 a.m. at the Aitken Centre while the Caps play host to second place Nord Ouest beginning 12:15 at the Tri-County Complex in Fredericton Junction.

N.B. Junior

Brian Dunn of the Fredericton Falcons is in a two-way tie for third place among the scoring leaders in the New Brunsiwck Junior Hockey League.

League stats show Dunn with 15 points including nine goals in eight games. Leading is Luc Williams of Kent Sud with 20 points including nine goals. Falcons are 2-6 in league play, second in the West.
