Colpitts up for national CSA award
Fredericton's Dayle Colpitts, the goaltender on the New Brunswick women's soccer team at the Canada Summer Games, is among six nominees in the girls U20 playing division for Canadian Player of the Year award sponsored by the Canadian Soccer Association. Voting for the awards is split evenly between the Canadian media and Canadian coaches who have taken the CSA's national course at the A and B levels.
Age categories include men's and women's national team members, men and women U20 and men and women U17. Voting ends Dec. 11 with the respective winners announced during the week of Dec. 14-18.
Bainbridge breaks N.B. powerlifting marks
Anthony Bainbridge of Fredericton established four new New Brunswick records in powerlifting at the Eastern Canadian championships held in P.E.I. Competing in the 75kg weight catetgory, Bainbridge's lifted included 207.5kg in the squat; 140kg in the bench press and 265kg in the deadlift event, giving him a total mark of 612.5kg (1,350 pounds). By virtue of his performance, Bainbridge qualified for the nationals scheduled for Quebec City in April.
Val Vlack, Bailey UNB top athletes
Fifth year basketballer Tashina Van Vlack of Golden, B.C. and third year hockey centreman and team captian Kyle Bailey of Ponoka, Alta. are this week's UNB/Valley Graphics Athletes of the Week at the University of New Brunswick for the period ending Sunday. Van Vlack, a point-guard with the V-Reds, had nine points on Saturday and added 13 more Sunday as UNB posted a pair of victories over UPEI Panthers.
Meanwhile, Bailey had two goals and an assist on Friday as UNB defeated Universite de Moncton 7-5 and then scored the game-winning goal in overtime Saturday as the V-Reds edged cross-campus rival St. Thomas Tommies 3-2.
Isaac, Everett earn top honours at STU
First year men's volleyballer Mike Isaac of Windsor, N.S. had 10 kills, four blocks and 15 digs and was named player of the match Sunday as St. Thomas split a pair of matches with King's College on the weekend. STU lost the first match 3-0 but rebounded to win Sunday 3-2.
Third year Kerrin Everett of Carleton County had nine points on Saturday and added 13 more Sunday as the STU women's basketball team split a pair of games against Mount St. Vincent's in Halifax. She also excelled defensively. For their respective efforts, the two are this week's Mooselight Male and Female Athlete of the Week at the school for the period ending Sunday.
2 NBers earn medals at fencing nationals
Two New Brunswickers - Marc-Andre LeBlanc of Shediac and Jennifer Akerman of Saint John - were among the competitors earning medals at the senior national fencing championships and cadet-junior competition held in Ottawa on the weekend. Four NBers took part overall. LebBlanc won bronze in the senior men's epee while Akerman earned bronze in the U17 cadet women's foil. Fredericton's Michael Dobbelsteyn of the Damocles Fencing Club was 18th in the junior men's foil, ninth in junior men's epee and 44th in senior men's epee.
