Midget Caps 'Kleenup' against Phantoms

The Fredericton A.L. Gullison Disaster Kleenup Caps struck for four unanswered goals in the final seven minutes to beat the Saint John Phantoms 7-2 in New Brunswick Midget AAA Hockey League action Monday afternoon at the Aitken Centre.

Ryan Cain led the Caps with two goals and an assist while David Brewer had a goal and two helpers. Matt Wright and Colton Stairs both had a goal and an assist while Tanner Banks and Jesse Cole added a goal apiece. Justin McCarthy-Paul picked up two assists.

Jordan Stephen, on a shorthanded penalty shot, and Jon Walsh replied for the Phantoms, were were outshot 42-26. Matt Bailey picked up the win while Jeremy Doyle took the loss.

After Banks and Stephen traded first period goals, Wright put the Caps up 2-1 with a power play goal at 16:50 of the second. Cole upped the lead to 3-1 with a PP goal 11:36 into the third, but Walsh cut the deficit to 3-2 just 57 seconds later.

However, Cain countered 26 seconds after that for a 4-2 lead, then Brewer, Stairs and Cain, with his second, blew it open late as Fredericton finished 4-for-6 on the power play. Saint John was 0-for-2.

The Caps improve to 15-8-2 and close to within one point of the idle Moncton Hawks (15-8-3) for first place with a game in hand.

Fredericton faces a gruelling schedule to wrap up the regular season. Monday's game was the first of six games in seven days.

The Caps meet the 8-18 West Kent Aces tonight at 7:45 in Baie Ste. Anne, play the Hawks at 6 p.m. Thursday in Moncton and meet the 10-14-1 Phantoms at 12:30 Friday afternoon in Grand Bay.

Fredericton hosts West Kent at 1:15 Saturday and Saint John at 1 p.m. Sunday, both at the Aitken Centre.

The league's four teams will compete in the provincials March 11-14 at the Cocagne Arena. The winner will represent New Brunswick at the Atlantics March 18-21 in Summerside, P.E.I.

Midget AAA

The Fredericton Darcy Simon Canadiens and Moncton Flyers are tied at 4-4 heading into Game 5 of their first-to-eight-points provincial midget AAA hockey semifinal tonight in Moncton.

Canadiens, who won 10 straight games to finish the regular season, were 4-1 winners in Moncton Saturday, but squandered an opportunity to add to their series edge when they lost 3-1 to Moncton at Willie O'Ree Place on Sunday afternoon.

Game 6 in the set is scheduled for Willie O'Ree Place on Thursday night beginning at 7:30. If seventh and eighth games are needed, they'll be played in Moncton.

The other provincial semifinal between Miramichi Rivermen and Saint John Vitos continues tonight in Miramichi with the pennant-winning Rivermen holding a 6-0 stranglehold in the series. If a Game 5 is necessary, it'll be played Thursday night in Saint John.

High school AAA

The Cite des Jeunes Republicans and Woodstock Thunder will meet in the third and deciding game of their west conference boys AAA high school hockey quarter-final Wednesday night at Carleton Civic Centre in Woodstock.

Both teams have home-ice wins to their credit. Woodstock won the first game 5-4 in double overtime while the Reps won Game 2 in Edmundston 8-1.

The winner takes on west pennant-winning Leo Hayes High DQ Lions in a best-of-five conference series that will determine one of the two reps from the conference advancing to the south-west regional tournament slated for Saint John March 19-21. No word as to a starting date for the series.

The other conference semifinal pits defending provincial champion Fredericton High Black Kats and Thomas Albert Elite of Grand Falls squaring off in a best-of-five beginning Friday night at the LBR, game time 7:30.

Kats ousted the Carleton North Stars in two straight games while the Elite did the same to Oromocto High Blues in their respective quarter-final rounds.

Game 2 is slated for Grand Falls on Sunday with Game 3 back at the LBR on Friday, March 12.

The two west survivors will join with the two survivors from the southern conference in the regional tournament. From that four-team tournament, two teams will advance to the provincial Final 4 slated for Miramichi on March 26-28.

Pee wee AAA

The process of determining a provincial Aliant pee wee AAA hockey league champion begins in earnest at Tri-County Complex in Fredericton Junction and the Aitken University Centre beginning Thursday.

Co-hosting the tournament are the Fredericton Sunbury Transport Canadiens, who finished fifth during the regular season, and the Fredericton Fujitsu Caps, who finished third during the regular season.

Canadiens are grouped in Division A with top seed Moncton Hawks and District 6 Rallye Motors Vees along with seventh-seed Pionniers du Nord-Ouest, ninth-seed West Kent Aces and 11th seed Miramichi Rivermen.

The Caps are in Division B with fourth seed Saint John Sea Dogs, sixth seed Acadian Peninsula Lynx, eighth seed Kennebecasis Valley Rangers and 10th seed Chaleur Titans.

Canadiens open up against the Vees Thursday at 2 o'clock while tne Caps play Chaleur in their first game Thursday at 4 o'clock. Both games are at the TCC. The tournament continues Friday and Saturday concluding with Sunday's championship final slated for 2:30, also at the TCC. Check the scoreboard page for the complete schedule.
