
Habs thump Leafs

It didn't take long for the Montreal Canadiens to put the Toronto Maple Leafs in their place.
Alex Tanguay had a goal and three assists Saturday to help his team hammer the Leafs 6-1 and register the first win of their centennial season.
The game got blown open early in the second period, when the Canadiens scored three power-play goals - two off Sergei Kostitsyn's stick, the other from Tanguay - during a stretch of five minutes 28 seconds to take a 5-0 lead.
Tanguay assisted on both of Kostitsyn's power-play goals.
Roman Hamrlik, Alex Kovalev and Guillaume Latendresse also scored for the Canadiens (1-0-1). Koivu added three assists. Jason Blake had the lone goal in reply for Toronto (1-1-0).
Elsewhere in the NHL it was: Detroit 3, Ottawa 2; New York Rangers 4, Philadelphia 3; New York Islanders 5, St. Louis Blues 2; Washington 4, Chicago 2; Florida 3, Atlanta 2; New Jersey 2, Pittsburgh 1; Carolina 4, Tampa Bay 3; Nashville 3, Dallas 1; Minnesota 4, Boston 3; Phoenix 3, Columbus 1; San Jose 3, Los Angeles 1; and Vancouver 5, Calgary 4.
At Ottawa, Johan Franzen scored twice in the third period to rally Detroit past the Senators. At Calgary, Pavol Demitra scored with 1:06 left in overtime to lead Vancouver .
