
NBers seeking gold at Challenge Cup

Four New Brunswick teams will be competing for gold as the Atlantic Challenge Cup hockey tournament concludes Monday at the Tim Hortons 4-Ice Centre.
The four-day tournament features five different age categories of male and female competition, with teams from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and P.E.I.
New Brunswick's male and female under-15 teams, under-14 male team and under-18 female team have all earned a berth into the finals and will play today for gold medals.
New Brunswick's fifth team, the male under-16 team, will compete for bronze.
Male Under-14
New Brunswick earned its spot in the tournament final with a lopsided victory over Prince Edward Island on Saturday, before falling to Nova Scotia yesterday.
Against P.E.I., Shane Dallaire scored a natural hat-trick and finished the game with five goals to lead New Brunswick to an easy 11-4 victory. Other scorers for New Brunswick were Noah Zilbert and Oliver Cooper with two and Scott Fenwick and Zachary Whitlock with singles.
Yesterday, the U14 squad had two goals from Mackenzie Brown but dropped a 9-5 decision to Nova Scotia. Also scoring for New Brunswick were Cooper, Ryan Donovan and Mitchell Vanderlaan.
Nova Scotia had two goals from Nathan MacKinnon and singles from Brett McNeil, Cole Murphy, Ryan Legere, Jeffrey Hanes, Brendon Duff, Tyler Brown and Bronson Beaton. Carter Sullivan was the goaltender for Nova Scotia, while Joey Arseneau was New Brunswick's goaltender.
New Brunswick finished the round robin with a 2-1-0 record and will get a chance to avenge yesterday's loss when they play Nova Scotia (3-0-0) in a rematch for the gold medal today at 3 p.m.
Male Under-15
The under-15 team split a pair of games over the weekend, beating P.E.I. on Saturday before being doubled by Nova Scotia yesterday.
New Brunswick used two goals from Robert Pelletier to upend P.E.I. 6-2. Matt Bursey, Sam Merrithew, Ryan Langan and Brett Malone added single goals for the winners. Jordan Gallant and Stephen Anderson scored for P.E.I. The winning goaltender was Remi Brun, while Dylan McQuaid took the loss.
Yesterday, Jeremy Vatour, Brett Malone, Francis Bernier and Patrick Levesque all scored for New Brunswick as they dropped their last game of the round robin to Nova Scotia by a score of 8-4. Nova Scotia had two goal performances from Jesse MacInnis and Liam O'Brien, while Scott MacSween, Kyle Piercey, Taylor Burke and Ryan Penny had single goals. New Brunswick's goaltender was Heath Bubar, while Jason Ellis earned the victory for Nova Scotia.
New Brunswick finished with a 2-1-0 record and will play Nova Scotia (3-0-0) in today's gold medal game at noon.
Female Under-15
New Brunswick finished the round robin strong with a pair of wins over Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia over the weekend. On Saturday, New Brunswick took a 3-1 decision over P.E.I.
Katherine Richard, Bria Harding and Schyler Campbell scored for the winners, while Jennifer Dillon responded with P.E.I.'s lone goal. The winning goaltender was Chelsea Hodges, while Jessica Cameron took the loss.
Yesterday, the New Brunswick squad finished the round robin with a bang as they cruised by the Nova Scotia squad 9-1. Renelle Savoie had a hat-trick while Taylor Dale and Campbell each had two goals. Cynthia Leger and Richard added single goals. Jennifer MacAskill scored the lone goal for Nova Scotia.
New Brunswick finished the round robin at 2-0-1 and will play Prince Edward Island (1-1-1) in today's final at 12:15 p.m.
Male Under-16
New Brunswick fell short of the gold medal game as it drew a pair of ties over the weekend against Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.
Phillip Fife scored twice as New Brunswick played to a 6-6 stalemate with Prince Edward Island. Also scoring for New Brunswick were Alex Murray, Peter Trainor, Bryce Milson and Dylan Jones. P.E.I.'s scorers were Spencer Montgomery with three, while Brent Andrews, Darcy Ashley and Daniel Muise had singles. Robert Steeves earned the tie for New Brunswick, while Ryan Deagle was in the P.E.I. goal.
Bruce Hornbrook, Maxime Godin, Chad Lavigne, Patrick Jones and Milson all scored for New Brunswick as they tied 5-5 yesterday against Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia answered with two goals Patrick MacIsaac and Greg Jansz and a single from Nick Parker. New Brunswick's goaltender was Samuel Renault, while Christopher Clarke was between the pipes for Nova Scotia.
The bronze medal game will feature New Brunswick (1-0-2) and Newfoundland and Labrador (0-3-0) and will take place today at 12:15 p.m.The gold medal for the division will feature Nova Scotia and P.E.I. and will be played at 3:15 p.m.
Female Under-18
New Brunswick split a pair of games over the weekend, edging P.E.I. before falling to Nova Scotia. Natalie Cormier scored the winner as New Brunswick downed P.E.I. 3-2 on Saturday. Other scorers for the winners were Kim Deschenes and Anissa Gamble. P.E.I. had goals from Molly Gotell and Keirstin Visser. The winning goaltender was Alsyha Manderson while Allison St. Pierre took the loss in the P.E.I. goal.
Yesterday, New Brunswick dropped a 5-2 decision to the Nova Scotia squad. Sarah MacDonald and Janik Robichaud scored the lone goals for New Brunswick in the loss. Nova Scotia was led by two goals apiece from Sydnee Parker and Sarah Robichaud and a single from Alex Normore.
In a rematch of yesterday's tilt, New Brunswick (2-1-0) will square off against Nova Scotia (3-0-0) in today's final at noon.
