New details are emerging about the Chevrolet Volt's technical prowess, a vehicle that can plug into the wall to recharge its batteries.

Parent General Motors hopes to have it on sale by 2010. GM engineers are performing accelerated durability tests on the Volt's massive t-shaped battery, which is nearly three meters long and weighs more than 160 kilograms.

The Volt is designed to go more than 70 kilometres with just electric power and more than 600 kilometres with a combination of battery and internal combustion-gasoline-engine power.

As an in-city commuter vehicle, it's possible that the Volt will never use a drop of gasoline.
